An internship at the Halsey Institute is an invaluable opportunity for students (and recent graduates) at any level to gain experience in a professional gallery setting. Our interns become involved with all aspects of the Halsey Institute, starting with the understanding of our mission, past programming, future programming, membership, and daily responsibilities of running a nonprofit organization. Much of our interns’ time is spent on exhibition research, writing, installation, and promotion. Although internships may be tailored to fit the interests and skills of each intern, participants are deemed generally useful, meaning they have the opportunity to assist with anything related to Halsey Institute programming.
The primary role of a Halsey Institute Intern is in visitor services as a gallery attendant. You become the public face of the Halsey and serve as an educator and connector with gallery visitors. In this role, you are also responsible for protecting and caring for the artwork on view and the exhibition space. Interns are given a regular weekly schedule based on everyone’s availability. Shifts are typically 3 hours at a time, but can also be stacked with a lunch break. Because this is an unpaid internship, we recommend 2 shifts per week or 3 shifts per week if you are completing the internship for credit.
In addition to your visitor services role, you will have focused rotations under direct guidance and mentorship of each Halsey Institute staff member in the areas of development, marketing, exhibitions, administration, and education. This general overview allows you to be introduced to all aspects of operating an arts organization and provides an opportunity to build mentorships with each staff member.
Throughout each term, interns will also be encouraged to write at least one blog post, support special events, and observe advisory board meetings when available.
We are now accepting applications on a rolling basis. Interested applicants of all majors and experience levels are encouraged to send a current résumé and cover letter to the attention of Kaylee Lass at LassKR@cofc.edu with the subject line “Halsey Institute Internship Application”. Please indicate in the email your preferred term (i.e. Spring 2027).
